Preventive medicine is an essential component of obstetrics. There are several difficulties experienced by women in utilizing health care facilities and this is one of the reason for the high maternal and perinatal mortality in developing countries. To overcome this the government has launched various schemes to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality.

  1. Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy maternity benefit scheme (MRMBS):
    • This maternity benefit scheme was launched in Tamil Nadu in 1987 with the aim  to  reduce  maternal  and  perinatal  mortality.
    • Only for 2 deliveries the maternity assistance is provided.
    • The government of India has launched 'Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana' scheme for all eligible mothers with 60:40 sharing by central and state government. The government of India decided to launch PMMVYS scheme in combination with MRMBS scheme for eligible mothers for their first child.
    •  Distribution of Financial Assistance:
      1. 1st  instalment : Antenatal registration on or before 12 weeks - INR 2000 
        Benefit of kind : First nutrition kit on completion of 3rd month - INR 2000 
      2. 2nd instalment : After 4 months -  INR 2000
        Benefit of kind : Second nutrition kit - INR 2000
      3. 3rd instalment : After delivery in government institution - INR 4000
      4. 4th instalment : After those who received 3rd instalment and after completion of 3 doses of OPV, Rota, Pentavalent and 2 doses of IPV - INR 4000
      5. 5th instalment : After those who received 4th instalment and after completion of measles and rubella vaccine in 9 to 12 months of their infants -  INR 2000
      6. In total, of  INR 18,000.
  2. JANANI SURAKSHA YOJANA (JSY) -  is a safe motherhood intervention under the national health mission. This scheme integrates with cash assistance with delivery and post-delivery care. Cash assistance is given to mothers who deliver in primary health centres, community health centres, sub district hospitals, first referral unit It is entitled with cash assistance of Rs. 600 for mothers who deliver in urban areas and Rs. 700 for mothers who deliver in rural areas.
     
  3. JANANI SHISHU SURAKSHA KARYAKARAM -  scheme launched in Tamilnadu since sep 2011. This scheme is to benefit pregnant women who access government facilities for maternal and child health care and to alleviate out of pocket expenses.
  4. The following are the Free Entitlements for pregnant women: 
    • Free and cashless delivery
    • Free C-Section
    • Free drugs and consumables 
    • Free diagnostics
    • Free diet during stays in the health institutions 
    • Free provision of blood
    • Exemption from user charges
    • Free transport from home to health institutions 
    • Free transport between facilities in case of referral
    • Free drop back from Institutions to home after 48hrs stay 
  5. The following are the Free Entitlements for sick infants: 
  • Free treatment
  • Free drugs and consumables 
  • Free diagnostics
  • Free provision of blood 
  • Exemption from user charges
  • Free Transport from Home to Health Institutions 
  • Free Transport between facilities in case of referral

FAMILY PLANNING SERVICES:

  • For puerperal sterilization/ lap sterilization/ interval sterilization - Rs. 600
  • PPIUCD ( CuT ) - Rs. 300
  • Male sterilization- NSV (No scalpel vasectomy) for partners - Rs.1100
